Waco's #9 Attraction - Dr. Pepper Museum!
There is nothing that speaks more to the roots of Waco, TX than a good old Dr. Pepper. This iconic museum includes the original bottling plant, which opened in 1906 in the historic Kellum-Rotan building. This particular building was constructed in the 1880s which make it one of the oldest buildings that remain in the downtown-Waco area.
The museum includes some of the most exquisite soft drink collections in the world. The drinks are not all Dr. Pepper oriented and include some outside brands such as Pepsi-Cola and Kickapoo Joy Juice. These collections serve as a source of information for all soft-drinks.
Dr. Pepper, which originated in Waco, Texas, is the oldest major soft drink in America. It was made by Dr. Charles Alderton at a Old Corner Drug Store in 1885. A fun fact is that Coca-Cola would start a year later! From Dr. Pepper's unique slogans such as "I'm a Pepper" to "JUst what the Doctor Ordered," have made the brand a universal success in the soft-drink industry.
I first visited this iconic museum when I was really young, but appreciated the deep history that this museum offered. I vividly remember being able to make your own soda, and then getting to try it! I thought that aspect was really cool.
The museum opened to the public in May 1991 and has had over 2.5 million visitors since then! When it first opened there was only 1,600 artifacts, but today there are over 300,000 in this must-see museum. So, whether you are just strolling through Waco, seeing Magnolia, or are just a bored Baylor student, I would hands-down recommend visiting this soda masterpiece.
One does not even need to be a lover of any type of soda or Dr. Pepper for that matter, but it really is a neat piece of Waco history that all should experience.
